In Treta Yuga (According to Hindu philosophy, the Yugas denote four distinct ages of mankind. Currently we are in the Kali Yuga. The Treta Yuga is the Sanskrit name given to the second of the four Yugas.) when the world witnessed existence of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita; an incident took place during the last ritual which was being performed after demise of King Dasharatha.
Let us learn what exactly happened !
Curses given by Goddess Sita :
  • After demise of King Dasharath, Lord Rama along with Lakshaman visited Gaya to perform the last ritual (Pinda-daan) for him. When the brothers were bathing in the river, Sita was sitting on the banks, playing with the sand. Suddenly, Dasharatha appeared out of the sand, and asked for the Pindam, saying he was hungry. Sita asked him to wait till his sons returned, so that she could give him the traditional Pindam of rice and til. He refused to wait, asking her to give him Pindams made of the sand in her hand. Goddess Sita, when realised that no more time is left, completed the ritual on her own, in absence of Lord Rama and Lakshaman.
  • After sometime Lord Rama and Lakshaman came back and asked Goddess Sita about the ritual. Goddess Sita replied that she has completed the ritual on time as the auspicious time was approaching. She also asked them to check with the Crow, the Cow, the Pandit (Priest) and the River Phalgu as they were present there during the ritual as witness.
  • When Lord Rama checked with the four witnesses, they all denied that any ritual was performed by Goddess Sita.
  • Hearing this, Goddess Sita cursed the four witness forever.
  • She cursed the Priest (Pandit) by saying, "No matter how much you earn, you will never get rich."
  • She cursed River Phalgu by saying, "No matter how heavily it rains, you will always seem to be a dried river".
  • Cursed the crow by saying,"No matter how healthy you are, you will die suddenly for no reason".
  • Cursed the cow by saying, "Even after being worshiped by everyone in every home, you will always get the leftover food to eat."
  • These curses given by Goddess Sita exist even today.
No matter how much donation a Priest gets today, he is seldom gets rich; A Cow still gets worshiped by us but gets leftover food usually to eat; Phalgu river in Gaya (Bihar) stays almost dried up and A Crow still is found dead suddenly even in todays era.
